GRGUR JAKŠIĆ’S MEMOIRS

Summary/Abstract: The document that presented Grgur Jakšić is named Memoirs, therefore the same title has been kept. The document Memoirs covers Jakšić’s studies at the Great School until the first decade of his life abroad. Following the list of mentioned events, the documents refer to the period from 1891 until 1903. As demonstrated in this paper, the document is important not only for the reconstruction of Jakšić’s personal life but also for the diversity of events and personalities he mentions. Moreover, it is important to understand the beginning of Serbian national propaganda in France, which Jakšić conducted for two decades of his life in Paris. The document is kept in Jakšić’s found in the National Library of Serbia. It has several versions labeled P558/III/24, “short autobiography of Grgur M. Jakšić, consul in Piraeus, (in mission in France)”; P558/III/29; P558/III/50 which was elected to be published since it is the most detailed of all three. The document has been published integrally, preserving Jakšić’s orthography, omissions and gaps in the text. For better understanding, the entry study has been provided in which there are cross-checked Jakšić’s statements with other sources.
