Summary/Abstract: In the Hungarian state archive, in the presidential files fund, the author found a hitherto unknown letter of the Serbian patriarch Samuil Maširević written in Dalj on June 26, 1868, which was addressed to the Prime Minister of Hungary, Count Gyula Andrássi. The letter is actually a response to Andrássi’s request that the Patriarch go to the Ravanica monastery as soon as possible and prevent the holding of a large public gathering on the occasion of the Vidovdan celebration. Count Andrássi and Croatian ban Levin Rauh received reliable news that the Vidovdan celebration would be misused by the People’s Party in Srem, so they were anxious that the celebration, which will be attended by Svetozar Miletić and Jovan Subotić, would not thwart the already ready plans for the Croatian-Hungarian settlement. Maširević informed Andrássi in a letter that due to illness he could not go to Ravanica, that the celebration ended with the presence of numerous visitors, but that everything ended without excesses. In the letter, he lashed out at Miletić, the Serbian People’s Liberal Party, the United Serbian Youth, the newspaper Zastava and Vladimir Jovanović. He did not choose the words for all of them. He called them scumbags, punks, bloodsuckers, evil offspring and villains. He advocated that strict measures be taken against them and that the government stand in the way of their anti-state activity. With the intention of explaining the reasons for which Maširevic was so exclusive towards his political opponents, the author presented several data and based on them concluded that it was Maširevic who laid the foundations for a political detour embodied in the fierce conflict between the Serbian church hierarchy and the Serbian liberal-democratic citizenship.
