Summary/Abstract: Lazar Zuban was one of the most important Serbian intellectuals of the 19th century. As a person with broad European views, his activity and interests were reflected in many fields of social activity. He belonged to a group of Serbian intellectuals who, during the reign of Prince Miloš Obrenović, moved to the Principality of Serbia and significantly helped in its cultural, political and economic development. In the newly formed Principality, he was a people’s representative, state adviser, people’s colonel and translator. As a prominent constitutional defender, he contributed to limiting the rule of Miloš Obrenović. In the conflict with the oligarchy in the Principality, in the days when the movement in Vojvodina in 1848/49 needed to be quickly and effectively helped, he remained almost alone. He was on friendly terms and corresponded with Vuk Karadžić, Simo Milutinović, Patriarch Josif Rajačić, Stevan Knićanin and many others.
