Summary/Abstract: During the period of the communist dictatorship between 1945 and 1989, one of the highest forums of the Communist Party was the Central Committee. As members of Hungarian origins were present in the body, the Hungarian community has had its representatives there. But since the CC had little real power, membership was only of symbolic value. The statistical investigation established that the proportion of Hungarian members was fluctuating. There were times when Hungarians were overrepresented compared to the total number of the population, but there were times when it was far below (5%). Most CC members came from a multilingual environment, which is why they were more “understanding” toward the party leaders’ and Romanian members’ positions on the issue of nationalities. The investigation revealed that there were CC members who held this symbolic function only for two months, while others were members of the body for up to 20–30 years. However, none of the Hungarian members of CC was in position to improve the legal situation of the Hungarian minority in Romania.
