The Highest Taxpayers of Csík County between 1887 and 1918

Summary/Abstract: The paper focuses on the analysis of the largest taxpayers, also known as virilists, in Csík County between 1887 and 1918. These top taxpayers constituted not only the economic, but also the social elite, playing a significant role in the economic, social, and political life of the county. The aim of the study is to map this elite group within Csík County. The most important sources of the research are the registers of the largest taxpayers. These lists were compiled annually, and those included were admitted to the county’s municipal committee, forming half of its membership. Although several studies have addressed the topic of major taxpayers in general, Csík County remained, until recently, a largely unexplored area.
