Summary/Abstract: The market town of Huedin (Bánffyhunyad), situated in Cluj County, functioned as the administrative center of a major estate since the medieval period. Owing to its location along a major thoroughfare, it evolved into a significant hub of commerce. It held particular importance as the central estate seat of the influential Bánffy family. Fragmentary historical sources indicate that, during the 16th century, the town’s inhabitants were granted exemption from the monarch’s taxation; however, they remained obligated to fulfill duties related to postal services and the billeting of officials or military personnel. Official documents – including Hungarian and Latin records issued by the town council, as well as a charter containing administrative instructions from the Bánffy family – offer valuable insights into the structure and functioning of local self-government during this period.
