Summary/Abstract: The elegies written by Janus Pannonius during his early years as a student in Ferrara have rather been neglected in literary history. While there is a rich scholarly literature on his mature elegies written in Hungary, the Italian elegies have scarcely been dealt with. Even József Huszti’s monumental monograph is remarkably narrow on Janus’ elegiac poetry of this period. This is probably related to the fact that these poems were largely composed on specific occasions, often written on request. In our study, we examine a few examples of prosody, realia and mythology in an attempt to place Janus’ early poetic career in the context of the Latin poetry of the Quattrocento.
