Summary/Abstract: We associate the birth of Hungarian national painting with a very eventful period in 19th century social, literary and art history. However, the contemporary history of Hungarian women painters is still missing from art history. In my paper, I will examine the factors that have contributed to this gap, which is still unfilled today. In my view, the contemporary position of Hungarian women painters and the undeserved fading of their memory (or their failure to create it) was made more difficult by the simultaneity of the following factors: the birth of the ideal of Hungarian national art, the late institutionalisation of art education, the emergence of museum culture, the emergence of art history as a discipline, the new biological image of women in the 19th century and the problem of the male gaze.
