Summary/Abstract: This article offers a critical analysis of the historiography surrounding the Romanian Orthodox Church’s mission in Transnistria between 1941 and 1944. The topic lie sat the intersection of religious history, wartime politics, and postwar identity construction. After decades of silence under the communist regime, the subject has been revisited in thepost-1989 period, often with either apologetic or accusatory tones. The study traces the main historiographical trends, highlights key contributions, and identifies the methodological and ideological challenges involved in interpreting this historical episode. The conclusions argue for a balanced, source-based and interdisciplinary approach, aiming to move beyond both oversimplification and mythologization.
