Summary/Abstract: The „gypsies” (Roma) are attested in the Romanian space from the Middle Ages (14th-15th centuries) and their historical evolution was defined by slavery and nomadism, their emancipation taking place in the middle of the 19th century. The Roma family was endogamous, trying to stop or avoid the interference of the masters, most often of the extended type. The “Vătraşi Gypsies” (semi-nomadic or settled) lost over time their specific characteristics of the nation, even their language, they tried to get closer to the communities they lived, next to and imitate them. In contrast, the “Corturari Gypsies” preserved the language and the old traditions and customs. The rituals were simple, caused mainly by poverty, and passed down through the centuries.
