Summary/Abstract: The year 2024 is the 100th anniversary of the death of Vilmos Fraknói (1843-1924). Fraknói was the main organiser of the Hungarian historical research in the Vatican after the gradual opening of the collections of the Holy See from 1881. He launched the Monumenta Vaticana Hungariae, and in the 1890s he founded the Institute of Hungarian History in Rome as a private institution from the proceeds of his ecclesiastical benefices. The present paper outlines this epoch and the difficulties of the subsequent period of Hungarian research in the Vatican, and finally describes the mission, the work of the research group named after Fraknói, and the main directions of its research in Vatican and in church history.
