Summary/Abstract: The emergence of Aranđelovac is closely tied to with the construction and development of the Bukovička Spa. Mostly planned, but in certain historical stages also spontaneous, the Bukovička Spa was built for several purposes – to utilize mineral and thermal waters for treatment, to organize a public health system, to promote tourism and increase budget revenues, to stimulate economic growth, among others. The organized arrival of guests to this health resort began in 1838, except for short interruptions during the First and Second World Wars, has continued to this day. An analysis of rich archival material on the construction of the spa infrastructure, the emergence of the city, and the cultural and social life in this part of Šumadija – much of which remained unprocessed up to date – makes it possible to gain a significantly broader insight and acquire certain ideas about the overall political and economic circumstances in the country from the first half of the 19th century to the present day, which – viewed from the perspective of history – has a certain scientific importance. However, viewed from the perspective of strategic studies (or strategology), political and organizational sciences (management of state institutions), research on this topic takes on a different significance highlighting how original historical experiences can inform the design and implementation of state development strategies. The case study of Bukovička Spa is a suitable example, since it was literally built “from the ground up”, which makes it possible to follow ways and scope in which its growth influenced the economic, social and political conditions in northern Šumadija. It also demonstrates how the Principality of Serbia was developed in a relatively short historical period by relying on its own resources and the engagement of foreign experts. Undoubtedly, this case study offers valuable lessons and can serve as a framework for defining and implementing new development strategies in the Republic of Serbia.
