Summary/Abstract: The Principles on Effective Interviewing for Investigations and Information Gathering (Mendez Principles) require that investigations be grounded in the law, ethical principles, and the achievements of science. Particular emphasis is placed on psychology in the practice of interrogation. Compliance with the Principles of Mendez requires the use of scientifically proven methods, criteria and expert analyses of applied psychology. This article examines the psychologist's participation in criminal proceedings while conducting interrogations of defendants and witnesses, when the law permits, and in cases involving assigned psychological expertise.
