Summary/Abstract: Shaped around the theme of travel, the second “Fundament” non-fiction festival in Kyiv invited visitors into a multilayered journey that stretched far beyond physical movement, turning books, exhibitions, and personal archives into portals of discovery. Through its curated “Shelf of Intellectual Journeys,” the festival highlighted how literature can lead readers across cities, centuries, family histories, and cultural transformations, making even a private bookshelf a site of exploration. A dedicated exhibition on traveler and writer Sofia Yablonska revived her legacy through rare artifacts, photographs, and film fragments that testified to her adventurous life and global curiosity. The expansive “Journey Space” further broadened the experience with photographic reflections on Ukrainian bus stops, the evolving cultural home of Yurko Pokalchuk, and immersive projects such as Ukraїner’s documentary work and VR landscapes from above. Across more than sixty events, the festival blended conversations on culture, memory, war documentation, decolonization, and artistic heritage, encouraging visitors to consider their own routes through the cultural map of Ukraine. Ultimately, “Fundament” celebrated the idea that the most transformative trips begin not with a ticket, but with a book—and that every reader is a traveler charting endless new territories of thought.
