Summary/Abstract: We know little about what happens in Latin American academic environments, to what extent they adopt or adapt Western concepts and to what extent they innovate based on their own traditions. Beyond the general agreement regarding insufficient funding, most Mexican cultural attachés emphasize the need to adapt programs to the typology of the location, as there are big differences between how a program should look in Asia (where little is known about Mexico beyond soap operas) versus a program in Texas where in some cities most of the inhabitants are of Mexican origin. Improving Mexico’s brand globally involves, first and foremost, better management and representation of its immense cultural heritage. Mexico will not soon be able to play on an equal footing with the US economically or politically, but it can play in the same league in terms of power and cultural capabilities.
