Summary/Abstract: According to social, historical and political aspects, art represents an extremely powerful tool for promoting, criticizing or dislocating political ideologies and social structures. The insertion of various artistic fields as forms or activism, has often caused changes in the normative-legislative framework, but above all, they have changed the way in which the public relates to the main socio-political themes, through messages that have been transmitted by artistic structures: visual arts, music literature, etc. This approach follows, through specific visual examples, a series of artistic manifestations from propaganda to protest, through which art has been a social catalyst, pointing (out) at, through its own vocabulary, social and ideological inequities, etc., promoting various movements, being censored by the authorities; these situations certify the importance of art in shaping the relationship between the individual and society. In direct relation to politics, several defining roles of art can be identified: the role of propaganda, art being used, with a deep emotional impact, by official and governmental structures or even resistance movements to promote and communicate specific agendas. Another role of art was that of mechanism of “social commentary“ that highlighted class disparities, civil rights, gender politics, etc. Art also played an extremely important role in social activism and forms of protest, fueling dissident, cultural, political and social movements, sometimes in the form of anonymity (e.g., Banksy, Guerrila Girls, Public Enemy).
