Summary/Abstract: The article reveals some highlights of the concert activity of the famous Bulgarian pianist Ivan Torchanov (1886 – 1928). His brief artistic presence in the first decades of the 20th century played a key role in the imposition of artistic criteria in our national piano school. His concert and teaching activities are fundamental for the final refocusing from amateurism to professionalism in Bulgaria in the second decade of the last century. The significant presence of Ivan Torchanov and Andrey Stoyanov (1890 – 1969) formed the initial bipolar model of our piano school: Viennese academicism and Polish school. The concert programs and critical materials with the participation of Ivan Torchanov are discussed in the context of building a new type of music performance culture modelled on the Western European model.
