Summary/Abstract: Bishop Iuliu Hossu remains in the Romanian historical consciousness as one of the most important figures of the twentieth century. His entire life unfolded between two defining dimensions: as a man of his time, engaged in history, and as a man of the Church. He was both an active witness to the great political transformations of the Romanian nation and a servant of spiritual values, devoted to pastoral mission and prayer. Throughout his episcopate, Bishop Iuliu Hossu was seen as a living, involved presence. His pastoral activity was marked by an authentic closeness to the people, and the canonical visitations were the most concrete expression of this spirit of service. These canonical visits - often referred to in that era as "popular missions"- were not mere administrative duties. For Iuliu Hossu, they became true pilgrimages into the lives of his faithful. Walking through villages, meeting priests, talking with peasant families - all these moments mapped out a living diocese that he knew not through statistics, but through the heartbeat of his people. Yet this work was not merely institutional. It reflected a deep personal commitment: to be a true shepherd to his flock. In this sense, priests always felt his closeness—not only through authority but through personal example. He frequently attended protopresbyterial synods, supported religious missions, encouraged reading, education, and moral living. He urged priests to serve rather than to be served, to remain among their people, and to draw strength from that same “parental hearth” from which he too had once kindled his vocation. All of this explains why, in December 1932, on the fifteenth anniversary of his episcopal consecration, the celebration organized by theology students and clergy in Cluj had a special significance. It was not a pompous event, but a sincere, heartfelt recognition of a man who— within just 15 years—had become a symbol of faith, courage, and devotion. In that "small jubilee of a great man," as the press of the time beautifully described it, one could see the full portrait of a bishop who never forgot the country roads, the dust on the shoes of rural priests, or the simple soul of the faithful he served. And for those who knew or met him, Iuliu Hossu was not just “Father Bishop” - he was someone who truly made you feel loved.
