Summary/Abstract: The years 1848 and 1849 represented a political and ideological change for Europe. These changes also led to violent conflicts, which materialized in civil wars. The Habsburg Empire was threatened by the Hungarian revolution, which endangered the stability of the monarchy. In Transylvania, the war took place mainly from the end of 1848 to the middle of the following year, when the intervention of the Russian army led to the suppression of the Hungarian revolution. As Transylvanian cities were conquered by the Hungarian revolutionary army, the fortress at Alba Iulia resisted a siege of almost six months, being defended by approximately 2,800 soldiers. The composition of the garrison was very diverse, with subunits from various regiments or battalions being moved during the siege. Divisions from the Carl Ferdinand, Leiningen, and Bianchi line infantry regiments were transported to various theatres of operation, including the fortress of Alba Iulia. The garrison also included other types of units, such as divisions of the Transylvanian hunter battalion, the Romanian Landsturm, and a subunit of the Ferdinand Maximilian light cavalry regiment.
