Summary/Abstract: Modern practice of architectural design, being part of the progressive development of modern architecture, is based on the difference in concepts and principles of architectural shaping of the two main movements of modernism and postmodernism. In accordance with the essence of the philosophical law of unity and struggle of opposites, they form two poles - rational and decorative. The concepts of rationality and decorativeness are present to one degree or another in all modern styles and directions of architecture, turning this division into a conditional category. Currently, the concept of architectural style is losing its original meaning as a set of compositional techniques and geometric forms, becoming a philosophy and a way of thinking, overcoming the limits of material utilitarianism. The functional and constructive solution no longer determines the volumetric shaping of the building and no longer dictates its image.
