Summary/Abstract: The aim of the present article is to showcase and discuss the forms of employee participation in Polish Philharmonics as well as to present beneficial and limiting managerial practices. Placing the employee participation within the context of the actually implemented practices and systemic conditions seems to be crucial. The research had a qualitative character and was based on interviews with directors as well as managerial staff of the public Polish philharmonics. The analysis of the gathered empirical material (individual, direct, partially structured interviews) allowed for the identification of factors beneficial and limiting to the development of employee participation in artistic cultural institutions. The research results indicate that the managerial model in Polish philharmonics combines elements of traditional hierarchy with increasing importance of participatory practices, which are reliant on institutional context and attitude of managing staff. The article concludes with a reflection on the possible enhancement and development of participation culture in artistic institutions as well as recommendations for their present and future managerial staff.
