On the Stage (of History)

Summary/Abstract: This article applies microhistorical tools, drawing in particular on the work of one of thefield’s founders, Carlo Ginzburg, to a reading of the biography of the folklorist PyotrBogatyryov (1893–1971), whose innovative methodological proposals continue to inspirescholarship today. The second dimension of the analysis concerns life under Stalinistterror, including the tragic death of Bogatyryov’s son, an outstanding translator, in 1976.The final section examines the functions of proper names in a totalitarian state. Thearticle argues that one of its defining features is the construction of parallel yet mutuallydisconnected worlds, a point developed with reference to Saul Kripke’s philosophicalinsights.
