Summary/Abstract: As a young and dynamically evolving interdisciplinary field, critical heritage studiesopened discussions on monuments and memorials to inspirations from the postsecularturn. An increasing number of scholars highlight the secular origins of the prevailingheritage protection systems, which often prove inadequate in addressing the specificforms of religious heritage. This article explores various proposals for postsecularapproaches to heritage and the opportunities they offer within critical heritage studies, with particular attention to their potential relevance to research on Central andEastern European heritage. The author discusses key theoretical publications, includingpostsecular perspectives developed by Polish scholars working in Central and EasternEurope. Using the example of the Hill of Crosses in Lithuania, the article illustrates howpostsecular approaches to heritage can assist in dismantling the binary oppositionsthat traditionally governed heritage protection practices, such as natural vs. cultural, and material vs. immaterial.
