Summary/Abstract: Anthropologists’ engagement with postsecular thought seems consistent with theopenness of anthropological theory to alternative, indigenous interpretations of realitythat challenge established theoretical canons. However, we currently observe twodivergent manifestations of the postsecular turn. The first provides a critical insight intothe apparent neutrality of anthropological theory, revealing its cultural particularity and(crypto)theological character. Consequently, this manifestation compels anthropologiststo constantly revise and decolonize their cognitive assumptions. The secondmanifestation strives to treat anthropologists’ metaphysical convictions “seriously,” andthus becomes a cognitive niche that serves to legitimize their beliefs. By genealogicallyanalyzing the arguments of proponents of both manifestations of the postsecular turn, the article reveals the epistemic dangers and dead ends of its explicitly religious andcurrently dominant manifestation.
