Religion and Literary Studies Discourses in the Postsecular Perspective

Summary/Abstract: The article explores various manifestations of the religious in literature in Polish andBulgarian humanistic traditions. The comparative approach highlights the significantculturally and religiously motivated differences in the status and understanding of thisresearch subject in both traditions. In fact, this approach problematizes the (Westerncentric)epistemological matrix common to both traditions, defined as the “aesthetics ofrepresentation.” Drawing on the anthropology of religion and on the assumptionsof postsecular thought, the author proposes a research approach grounded in a “theology ofpresence.” The article demonstrates a way of adapting the postsecular approach to thestudy of the history of ideas and the history of the humanities, raising awarenessof the cryptotheological entanglements of literary scholars, and calling for a discussion onliterary discourses as significant sources for the study of the history of the conceptof “religion” (its use and understanding).
