Summary/Abstract: The work is based on the analysis of ten original Ottoman documents related to the Novopazar fortress. As part of the work, documents were translated into the Bosnian language and their transcription from the Ottoman script. The documents cover various aspects of the administration, military organization and strategic importance of the fortress in the Ottoman period. Special attention is paid to the role that the Novopazar fortress had in the wider context of the Bosnian Vilayet, but also of the Ottoman Empire as a whole. Through content analysis, it was pointed out that the fortress is often called Kapija Bosna or Ključ Bosna in the sources, which clearly indicates its exceptional strategic position. The paper aims to provide a new contribution to the understanding of the Ottoman administrative and military presence in the southwestern regions of the Balkans through the original material.
