Summary/Abstract: The collective memory is a method of creating the past of community. In the 1930’s, when the press was a main medium, nationwide dailies had a possibility to keep the memory of the First World War. For the purpose of getting to know the interpretations of that history in the Central-European states, I chose some articles which were published in late July and early August in 1934 on the pages of the following newspapers: 'Ilustrowany Kuryer Codzienny', 'Wieczór Warszawski', 'Lidové Noviny' and 'Národní Listy'. Examining the news stories from popular dailies allowed me to answer a few questions: how did people remember the start of the First World War; which events were in their opinion the most important; what were the differences and similarities in interpretations depending on the editorial staff. Moreover, as Maurice Halbwachs said, collective memory reflects the present’s worries, so papers published on the 20th anniversary of the war gave us information on what political issues disturbed editors and readers of the chosen Polish and Czechoslovakian press.
