Summary/Abstract: Dubravka Ugrešić’s Fording the Stream of Consciousness is generally classified as an exemplary postmodern novel. This represents a critical consensus that presides over readings and commands its evident and unidirectional meaning, excluding other possible meanings, directions and contextualizations offered by the novel. Fording, ingeniously translated from Croatian Forsiranje, deprives the novel of its transgressive, forcible thrust that informs the tactics and strategy of fiction which is simultaneously a fiction of politics of reading: the novel fords, by force, the outside and the inside of literature, conjures and affirms the secret of its own improbable machine. The paper views Fording the Stream of Consciousness as a key work for understanding Ugrešić’s oeuvre and proposes conjunctive reading as a new approach that liberates the novel from narrow classifications and reveals its global interconnections.
