Summary/Abstract: This article examines the Finnish translation of Jolán Földes’s internationally successful novel The Street of the Fishing Cat (1936) within the political and literary context of the 1930s. The study analyses how the novel’s Finnish edition, published in 1937, modifies the representation of a politically charged character: a Finnish communist refugee appearing in the original Hungarian text is transformed into a Polish character in the translation. Drawing on theoretical perspectives from translation studies – particularly André Lefevere’s concept of translation as rewriting – and on sociological approaches to the literary field, the article argues that this alteration can be interpreted as a form of censorship shaped by the ideological climate of interwar Finland. The analysis situates the modification within the broader political tensions following the Finnish Civil War and the restrictive legislation directed against communist movements. By comparing the Hungarian original, the Finnish translation, and intermediary versions, the study demonstrates how translation practices may reflect the power relations and cultural constraints of the target literary field.
