Summary/Abstract: Out of the post‑1989 awakening of long‑suppressed injustices emerged a determined effort to give voice to the first victims of Soviet repression after 1945, a mission personified by journalist Vladimír Bystrov, whose personal family tragedy ignited the creation of the civic committee Oni byli první. His passionate campaign united descendants of those abducted to the Gulag, transformed scattered testimonies into structured historical inquiry, and pushed the Czech state to confront the forgotten fates of Russian émigrés and Czechoslovak citizens seized by Soviet security forces. Through painstaking archival work, bold diplomatic initiatives, and persistent public outreach, the committee uncovered names, stories, and official documents, while exhibitions, commemorative plaques, and publications brought these histories into national memory. Despite limited resources, its activities spanned research, advocacy, legal intervention, and cultural remembrance, culminating in partial rehabilitation and compensation for some families after years of negotiation. Bystrov’s relentless moral appeal stressed the duty to restore dignity to those abandoned by postwar authorities, even as public support fluctuated and political obstacles grew. His books, newspaper articles, and public speeches became both a chronicle of suffering and a call to responsibility, shaping one of the most significant memory‑activist movements of the post‑communist era. The committee’s dissolution in 2007, followed by Bystrov’s later state honors, closed a chapter marked by perseverance, courage, and an unyielding fight against historical oblivion.
