Summary/Abstract: Emerging as one of the most influential conservative thinkers of the 20th century, William F. Buckley Jr. reshaped American politics through his agile intellect, razor‑sharp wit, and unwavering anticommunism, leaving a legacy that stretched from Yale University to the Oval Office. His early critique of academic collectivism, his CIA experience, and his synthesis of classical liberalism, traditionalism and militant anti‑totalitarianism helped forge modern American conservatism and inspired a generation of political leaders, most notably Ronald Reagan. Founding National Review in 1955, Buckley created the ideological platform that galvanized a movement determined to confront communism abroad and counter liberal orthodoxy at home. His cultural impact grew through decades of public debate, television broadcasting, and a prolific literary output that included political commentary, autobiographical essays, and a celebrated series of espionage novels reflecting his philosophical and strategic worldview. Buckley’s charm, humor, and intellectual fearlessness brought conservative ideas into mainstream discourse, even earning begrudging respect from ideological opponents. Though he revised some early positions—most notably his stance on racial segregation—he remained throughout his life a passionate defender of Western civilization and a persistent voice warning against totalitarian threats. By the time of his death in 2008, he had become a symbolic architect of the Cold War’s moral narrative and a cultural force whose ideas continue to echo in American political life.
