Summary/Abstract: Emerging from the ruins of war and the anxieties of a divided continent, the text captures how Pius XII. envisioned a renewed European unity grounded not in political expediency but in the spiritual heritage that had shaped Europe for centuries. He perceived the continent’s deepest crisis in its estrangement from God and believed that only a return to Christian moral order could counter nationalism, secular liberalism, and totalitarianism that had scarred European history. Against the backdrop of the Cold War, he warned that communist expansion posed an existential threat to Christian civilization, while Western liberalism offered no sufficient moral anchor for lasting peace. His speeches and diplomatic initiatives reveal a sustained effort to infuse emerging European projects with natural‑law principles, human dignity, and solidarity, while advocating a synthesis of national identity and supranational cooperation. Rather than nostalgic medievalism, Pius XII.’s vision sought to adapt Christian values to the modern age, proposing a Europe capable of healing divisions, preserving cultural diversity, and resisting both ideological extremism and spiritual emptiness. His support for early integration efforts, including the coal and steel community, reflected a pragmatic hope that political cooperation could strengthen the continent’s moral foundations, restore its global role, and eventually reunite East and West.
