Summary/Abstract: The article presents an unknown icon by the icon painter Ioan Popovich from the town of Elena, which is kept in the Directorate of Museums – Koprivshtitsa. It is signed by the master using only the first letters of his name and place of origin and is dated 1847. Its existence changes our understanding of Ioan’s biography, since historiography holds that he died in 1845. Against this background, the icon serves as evidence that the painter was alive in 1847 and still working for Koprivshtitsa, where he created a large iconostasis in 1844 for the local Church of St. Nicholas. This raises the idea that Ioan may not have returned to Razgrad after his work in the mona steries around Veliko Tarnovo, known up to 1845 — which would also explain the absence of his works in Razgrad and the surrounding region after the 1830s.
