Summary/Abstract: Migration, as an integral part of our human condition, represents a diverse, timeless, and global historical phenomenon that is accompanied by profound transformations in the lives of both the migrating individuals and the societies involved in the migration processes. In light of this ongoing, experiential personal and societal change, it raises the question of what spaces for equal participation emerge from the interaction between immigrants and societies, and to what extent immigrants (cannot/do not) utilize the options available and arrangeable in society for self-determined living, for a socially integrated life based on their individual goals and life concepts. Against this backdrop, the focus of this article – drawing on the concept of participation and using a literary text – is on the migrant path to participation. Thus, questions about the self-responsible design of living environments, the ongoing negotiation of affiliations and action-guiding, future-oriented identities, about „settling in“ and „making a home“ move to the center of the discussion on the contentious issues of integration, inclusion and diversity. The article is therefore a plea for a culture-reflective foreign language and GFL/GSL-lessons (German as a Foreign or Second Language), in which the complexity of today’s world is taken into account through the use of literature and learners are encouraged to participate creatively and actively in society.
