Summary/Abstract: In public media, the focus increasingly aims at the visual perception rather than the purely verbal communication. Hybrid forms of communication combining linear and nonlinear features have come to offer a way of reducing information into easily accessible and comprehensible text-image units that are intended to capture readers’ attention and interest, and encourage further reading. The paper uses topos analysis methods to examine how eye-catchers (teasers and thumbnails) on internet sites of Polish and German public news programmes present the war in Ukraine and the concomitant social anxiety from a contrastive perspective. In addition, the question of whether the ambiguity of images is intensified or reduced in the case of such a sensitive topic will also be investigated.
