Summary/Abstract: Inscriptions, especially dedicatory ones, are records, from which a scholar can derive a great deal of varied information. It can listen to the anxiety of painters for protection and therefore the preservation of their work. In this article, my interest concerns instructions or curses, or both, written on mural paintings. My material comes from churches in Mani, in southern Peloponnese, during the post-Byzantine period (17th–19th c.). The instructions are specific and the curses are directed against the lives of those who damage the mural paintings. The painter entrusts the priests with the church’s upkeep.
