Summary/Abstract: Lev Prchala was born on 23 March 1892 in Polish Ostrava, and came from a family of mine supervisors. After graduating from primary school and a German grammar school in Frýdek, he began studying law in Vienna. However, he did not complete his studies, instead opting for a military career in May 1914. He served in the Austro-Hungarian army in lower command positions in the 13th Infantry Regiment until he was captured on 19 June 1916 on the Russian front near Chernivtsi in Ukraine. After spending a year in captivity, he enlisted in the Czechoslovak Legions on 15 June 1917 in Zadonsk, near Voronezh. He served in the 5th Rifle Regiment and went on to command the 8th Rifle Regiment. A successful and capable officer, he proved himself in battle against the Bolsheviks and quickly rose through the ranks. On February 1, 1919, he became commander of the 3rd Rifle Division with the rank of colonel. With this division, he left Vladivostok for his homeland in June 1920. During this time, he was repeatedly decorated with high Allied orders and even managed to get married.
