Summary/Abstract: In the history of Islamic civilization, the first teach￾er of religious education was the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), the first book was the Noble Qur’an, and the first institution was the Masjid al-Nabawi. In later centuries, as the Muslim geography expanded and new needs emerged, institutions multiplied; alongside the mosque, institutions such as the elementary school (mektep), the madrasa, and the tekke came into existence. In other words, the educational mission carried out solely by the Prophet Muhammad later became differentiated into subfields and was conducted by different individuals and institutions.
