Summary/Abstract: This paper explores the transformation of everyday life in Sarajevo during the Second World War, with particular emphasis on adaptation to wartime circumstances and the redefinition of social and cultural patterns of behavior. At the centre of the analysis lies the phenomenon of “wartime everyday life,” examined through the lens of private correspondence among the city’s residents. Letters, as valuable sources of personal testimony, provide insight into individual and collective strategies of survival, expressions of emotion, interpersonal relationships, and the ways in which people perceived and interpreted a reality marked by war. Through an analysis of these letters, the paper seeks to illuminate how residents, amid uncertainty, scarcity, and fear, strove to preserve a sense of normalcy and continuity in their daily life. Private correspondence not only reflects the broader social context, ideological pressures, and moral dilemmas characteristic of the wartime period, but also bears witness to the complexity of human experience in extraordinary historical circumstances. In doing so, the study contributes to a deeper understanding of the dynamics of “microhistory” and the significance of personal narratives in reconstructing social experiences during the Second World War.
