Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the problem of post-war collectivization in Central Europe in selected literary and film testimonies. Examples refer to collectivization itself and its effects, especially in Slovakia. I consider 1948 and 1968 to be the breakthrough dates, common for Poland and Czechoslovakia. After 1969, both Slovak and Polish filmmakers pointed to the collapse of hope for changes in the communist system, the impossibility of realizing the idea of “socialism with a human face”. The inhuman face of the system was revealed especially towards individual farmers who defended themselves against collectivization in the years of Stalinism and then tried to survive for decades, preserving their land.
