Summary/Abstract: Ignaty Krachkovsky – an outstanding Russian and Soviet Arabist – embarked on a research internship to the Middle East in the years 1908–1910. Despite his later efforts to go on another research trip, he never returned there. His first stay turned out to be his last. It seems that this fact significantly influenced how he presented this visit and the people he met at that time in the texts he published over subsequent years. This article looks at three Arab Christians he met during his research trip – Louis Cheikho, Ğurği Zaydān and the Patriarch of Antioch Gregory IV (Haddad) – as well as in what circumstances they had the opportunity to meet the Russian researcher, what impression they made on him, and how the meeting with each of them influenced his later academic work.
