Summary/Abstract: This study investigates the etymology of the word hörtük ‘wound’ used in Turkish dialects which has not previously been examined in detail. The study utilizes data from Turkish dialects, historical texts, and other Turkic languages. It argues that hörtük derives from the verb bert- through a series of phonological changes (bert- > bört- > *pört- > *hört-). The findings contribute to understanding phonological change patterns in Turkic languages and have implications for lexicographic classification in the Derleme Sözlüğü.
