Summary/Abstract: Too seldom have written documents and minted coins been analysed together. The present paper attempts to conduct such a survey based on recently discovered register entries and on peculiar but otherwise known ducats from Wallachia (c. 1410–1418) and Serbia (c. 1451–c. 1455). 1. The ducats minted by Mircea I of Wallachia together with a certain Petrusian have long been the object of scholarly debate. A coat of arms granted by Ferdinand of Aragon to knights in Sigismund of Luxemburg’s retinue (1415) might shed light on Petrusian’s identity. 2. The ducats issued jointly by despot George Branković and John Hunyadi were also subject to controversy. A supplication eventually rejected by Pope Callixtus III (1455) could serve an explanation for their meaning. 3. Last, but not least, the ducats and sources under scrutiny allow us to raise a question: to what extent does coin minting stand for political stability/ for political segregation? The answer is rather ambivalent.
