Summary/Abstract: The restoration works of the monastic ensemble in Bistrița, undertaken by the Historical Monuments Direction between 1969 and 1977, were preceded by systematic archaeological research. Among other architectural structures preserved at that time, the archaeological research also investigated the place of worship erected during the reign of Prince Alexandru Lăpușneanu (1554). The excavations revealed only fragments belonging to the foundations of the first church commissioned by Alexander the Good, and in some cases, merely the dismantled foundations trenches. Nevertheless, even under these circumstances, both the preserved structures and on site observations enabled archaeologists to outline and publish the layout of the church, along with some hypothetical observations regarding the vaulting system. However, we considered it appropriate to revisit this important monument with a more detailed and comprehensive architectural analysis. The present article aims to investigate the possible variants of architectural reconstructions of the church built during the reign of Alexander the Good, situating the monument within the broader context of the evolution of ecclesiastical architecture in Moldova.
