Indicators of the Popular Science Style in the Herbarium of Szymon Syrenski. Outline of the Issue

Summary/Abstract: The article is an outline of the problems related to the early popular science style. The purpose of the study is to analyze selected exponents of this style in the 17th-century Herbarium of Szymon Syrenski. This herbarium has already been studied in terms of belonging to the early scientific discourse. In order to conclude that the studied text exhibits characteristics of the popular scientific style, the author of the article pays attention to what roles the author and readers take in the communication process and what the relationship between them is. Then two features of popular scientific style – concreteness and imagery – were discussed, which, according to researchers of modern texts representing this style, are its basic determinants. The analysis proved that the herbarium exhibits features of popular scientific style despite the fact that, at the time of the work’s creation, the scientific style and its varieties had only just crystallized.
