A tale from the past. The discovery of the Sinaia axe-hoard

Summary/Abstract: In the study of chance finds of prehistoric metal artefacts, especially hoards, the reconstruction of the conditions of discovery is essential for achieving a comprehensive understanding of the context and associations of the component items and possibly of the ancient structures in which they were deposited. Usually, this information is either missing, incomplete, or contradictory. Regarding the axe hoard from Sinaia, there are several documents in the archives of the “Vasile Pârvan” Institute of Archaeology that meticulously describe all the events related to the discovery and recovery of this hoard, the result of an exemplary intervention by the authorities of the time and its documentation. However, these archival documents have been used only sparingly in scholarly discussions about the hoard, thus allowing incomplete or erroneous information about this discovery to be passed on over time. In this study, I will present the context and conditions of the discovery of the deposit by reconstructing the events that unfolded over the six days it took to discover and recover the respective pieces, as revealed by the aforementioned archival documents.
