Summary/Abstract: This publication offers an opportunity to re‑examine the way coins and monetary finds have been studied for many years, to consider the consequences that technological developments may have on the scientific discipline, and above all to highlight the place and role that Eugen Nicolae has had in Romania. In essence, it is first a reflection on how archaeologists and historians have perceived, understood, and analysed ancient coins and monetary discoveries. But the scope of the discussion must be clearly defined, both chronologically and geographically. The importance of coinage as a means of studying history is not the same across all periods under investigation.
