International student exchange between Serbia and North America: research context

Summary/Abstract: I conceived education and educational migrations as a subject of comparative research in rela- tion to Serbia-United States of America and Serbia-Canada. Whilst researching it during my master studies I tried to consider the prospects of those participating in student migrations which run in parallel and interlace in a highly specific way. In my MA paper I analysed the „conduct“ of ethnici- ties involved in exchange, the feeling of ‘home’ far from home, particularly in view of the structure of American student campuses, investment in the ‘spirit’ of the university and the effects of commercialisation of American universities, constructions of „student time“ and the attitude towards the state as reflected in the attitude towards the university. In this short paper I shall demonstrate the methodology used when adjusting to distant turf, the context of student migrations itself and the position of exchanged students as foreigners, migrants, tourists and students.
