Summary/Abstract: At a time when social and economic circumstances change so much that a craft becomes superfluous, the craftsmen look for a way to survive by adjusting their business to new needs, products and services. The transformation of the dyeing craft into chemical cleaning shops which has been taking place ever since the late 1960s confirms this ability of the craftsmen to survive under new circumstances. of about a dozen dyeing shops which were in operation in Kragujevac in the 20th century, only one shop remains where woollen cloth is dyed in the traditional manner but which provides chemical cleaning also. We shall try to explain the importance of dyers in the history of dressing, the circumstances under which the craftsmen were trained and worked in the 19th and 20th centuries, the causes behind the disappearance of the trade and its transformation into the chemical cleaning business.
