Summary/Abstract: Iconographical analysis of classical mythology, whose narratives have already been largely established, often provides important insight into the mindset and values of the era in which a certain work of art was created. Popular narratives regularly appeared in visual culture and art, however, although the original myth remained the same, its structure, and therefore its iconography, changed and developed over time. This paper will analyze the iconography of various depictions of the myth of Andromeda, ranging from its first classical appearances to the 19th century, with a special emphasis on the painting by Frederic Leighton, Perseus and Andromeda (1891). The aim of the work is to find and present important iconographic variations and their causes, and to put Leighton’s painting into historical context in which it was created.
